The Night the Speakeasy Came Alive: Inside Barnstormer’s Roaring ’20s Murder Mystery

When Prohibition Meets Farm-to-Glass: How We Brought the 1920s Back to Life
The speakeasy is closed. The mystery is solved. And Saturday night at Barnstormer Distillery will go down as one for the history books.
For months, we’ve been planning our most ambitious event yet—a full-immersion 1920s murder mystery experience that would transform our distillery into an authentic Prohibition-era speakeasy. As craft distillers operating on a 22-acre farm in Rockford, Illinois, we’ve always felt a deep connection to the bootleggers and moonshiners who kept American spirits alive during the dark days of the Volstead Act. These weren’t just lawbreakers; they were craftspeople who refused to let good spirits die.
So when we decided to create our winter event series at The Brasserie, a murder mystery set in a speakeasy felt like the perfect way to honor that rebellious spirit while giving our guests an unforgettable night out.
The Vision Takes Shape
The concept was deceptively simple: transport 50 guests back to 1926 Chicago, where rival gangs, Hollywood starlets, and shady characters would collide over bootleg whiskey and a dead body. But the execution? That required the same precision we bring to our distilling process.
Addie, our Master Mixologist, crafted a menu of era-appropriate cocktails featuring our own spirits—the same botanicals and techniques the bootleggers would have used, but with the quality and consistency they could only dream of. Every drink told a story. Every course paired perfectly with the unfolding drama.
The Ingredients of an Unforgettable Night
What makes a murder mystery work? It’s not just the script or the costumes—it’s the complete sensory experience.
The Spirits: We featured cocktails built on our craft vodkas and whiskeys, including drinks that would have been served in actual speakeasies. Bootlegger whiskey cocktails, gin rickeys made with our bathtub Gin, and period-accurate mixed drinks that showcased how Prohibition-era bartenders disguised harsh bathtub gin with fresh ingredients—exactly the farm-to-glass philosophy we practice today, just without the need to hide from the law.
The Setting: Our aircraft hangar, with its industrial charm and aircraft memorabilia in the background, proved to be the perfect speakeasy location. We dimmed the lights, added period music, and let the natural character of the space do the heavy lifting.
The Characters: This is where our guests became the true stars. Fifty people walked through our doors as gangsters, flappers, mob enforcers, and Hollywood elite. They didn’t just wear costumes—they became their characters. They investigated, accused, defended, and revealed secrets. The North Side and South Side sat under one roof, and somehow, we avoided starting a gang war (mostly).
The Food: Our kitchen delivered a multi-course feast worthy of a 1920s crime boss. Each dish was designed to complement the cocktails while keeping energy high for the mystery ahead. From elegant appetizers to decadent main courses, the meal became part of the storytelling—a reminder that even in the darkest days of Prohibition, people gathered to eat, drink, and celebrate life.
The Mystery Unfolds
The preparation for an event like this goes far beyond mixing drinks and planning menus. We choreographed the entire evening—when clues would be revealed, how accusations would play out, how the drama would build toward the final revelation. Drawing on my aviation background, where timing and precision can mean the difference between success and disaster, we ran this event like a well-orchestrated flight plan.
Every guest received their character assignment beforehand. Every actor knew their cues. Every course was timed to give the mystery room to breathe while keeping momentum building.
And then we let it happen.
The Perfect Pairing: Drama, Dining, and Craft Spirits
What we learned Saturday night is that the perfect pairing isn’t just about food and spirits—it’s about experience and engagement. The cocktails loosened tongues. The food kept energy high. The mystery gave everyone permission to play, to perform, to step outside their everyday lives.
When you pair exceptional craft spirits with immersive storytelling and a crowd willing to commit to the experience, magic happens. We’ve hosted many events at Barnstormer, but watching 50 people completely inhabit a different era, solve a murder, and celebrate together? That’s something special.

This may have been the best night we’ve ever put together at Barnstormer Distillery, and it’s entirely because of the guests who trusted us with their Saturday night, dressed up, got into character, and dove headfirst into the mystery.
The speakeasy may be closed for now, but the mystery of what we’ll create next is just beginning. We’re already planning our next themed dinner experience, and if Saturday night proved anything, it’s that there’s an appetite for events that transport you completely out of the ordinary.
